Most people buying a first aid kit check the contents, size and price. The zip probably doesn't get a second thought. On a construction site, mine site, workshop or in the back of a work ute, it is worth paying a little more attention to it.
A first aid kit zip forms part of the enclosure protecting the supplies inside. It does not make a bag dustproof or waterproof on its own, but in dirty work environments the quality of the closure matters. The zip, outer material, seams, storage location and overall construction all play a part in keeping first aid equipment protected and accessible.
First aid kits tend to be sold on what is inside them. One kit has 80 pieces, another has 120. One includes a snake bite bandage, another has more dressings or eye care. Those things matter, but they are only part of what you are buying.
The supplies also need to stay stored somewhere until they are needed. On a worksite that could mean months or years in a ute, workshop, site office, toolbag or underground vehicle. During that time the bag is exposed to the same general environment as the rest of the equipment around it.
Anyone who has worked around construction, mining or a busy workshop knows how quickly fine dust gets into things. It settles over tools, builds up inside vehicles and works its way around hinges, drawers, storage boxes and zips. First aid equipment sitting in the same environment is not immune to it.
This is where something as ordinary as the zip starts to matter.
Why Does the Zip on a First Aid Kit Matter?
A zip has two fairly simple jobs. It needs to keep the bag closed and it needs to let you get back into it without a fight.
On a workplace first aid kit, however, the closure also forms part of the barrier between the medical supplies and whatever is happening outside the bag. Depending on where the kit is kept, that could include fine dust, dirt, workshop grime, moisture and the general wear that comes from being moved between jobs.
The zip is also a working part. Unlike most of the bag, it moves every time somebody opens the kit to use a dressing, check an expiry date or restock supplies. Dirt and grit can accumulate around the teeth and slider, while the stitching and material around the opening can wear over time.
None of that means you need a specialised industrial zip on every first aid kit. It does mean the closure is worth looking at when the kit is going to spend its life somewhere considerably harsher than an office cupboard.
What Does Safe Work Australia Say About the First Aid Kit Itself?
Safe Work Australia's Model Code of Practice does not specify a particular zip, brand or style of first aid container. First aid kits can be different sizes, shapes and types depending on the workplace.
What the Model Code does say is that the kit should be made from material that protects its contents from dust, moisture and contamination. It also emphasises that workers need quick access to first aid equipment.
That's a useful way to think about the bag. The aim isn't to find a first aid kit with the chunkiest looking zip. It's to choose an enclosure that makes sense for the conditions where it will actually be used and stored.
Dust Is Where Cheap Closures Can Start to Show Their Weaknesses
Take a first aid kit that lives in a work ute. It might spend every working day around boots, tools and dirty PPE. A workshop kit can be exposed to grinding dust, metal particles and general grime. On a mine or civil site, fine dust can settle over almost everything.
Because the zip runs around an opening in the bag, it is an obvious area to inspect. Fine material can collect around the teeth and slider, particularly when the kit is handled with dirty hands or stored somewhere exposed.
Over time, you want the closure to remain straightforward to use. A zip that catches, separates or becomes difficult to operate is more than an annoyance when the equipment behind it is there for first aid.
The Zip Is Only One Part of the Bag
A heavy duty or weatherproof zip does not automatically make a first aid kit dustproof or waterproof.
The outer material, seams, stitching and overall construction matter as well. So does where the kit is stored. A well made portable bag should still be kept away from unnecessary exposure to rain, standing water, excessive heat and contaminants wherever practical.
What Does a Heavy Duty First Aid Kit Zip Look Like?
The easiest way to understand the difference is to actually look at one up close.

Tooth size isn't a quality test on its own, and there is no rule saying a first aid kit needs to look like this. What we like about this style of closure is that it fits the purpose of the bag. The Classic is intended to be carried around worksites, stored in vehicles and used in environments where dust and dirt are normal rather than unusual.
When you're comparing kits, physically opening one tells you more than a piece count on the packaging. Run the zip around the bag. Look at how it joins the outer material. Check the stitching around the opening and see whether the slider moves cleanly around corners.
A Smaller Kit Doesn't Need to Be Built Like a Large One
The Compact gives us a good example of why you shouldn't judge a first aid kit by how oversized its zip looks.
It is a much smaller bag, designed to fit into toolbags, work vehicles and other spaces where the Classic may be more kit than you need. It still uses a 5mm weatherproof rip stop outer and heavy duty thick tooth zip, but the closure is incorporated into a smaller, lighter package.

A Compact Kit that sits behind a ute seat or clips onto a bag has different design requirements to a larger kit kept in a workshop or carried around a mine site. What matters is whether the zip, outer material and overall construction suit the job the kit is expected to do.
Weatherproof and Waterproof Aren't the Same Thing
This is an important distinction when you're buying any first aid kit for outdoor or industrial use.
A weatherproof bag should not automatically be treated as waterproof storage. Unless a product has been specifically designed and tested for a particular level of water protection, don't assume you can leave it in driving rain, drop it into water or store it permanently somewhere wet.
The sensible approach is to combine a suitable bag with a suitable storage location. If a kit lives in a ute, keep it somewhere protected rather than loose in an exposed tray. In a workshop, don't mount or store it directly beside an area constantly exposed to spray, grinding debris or wash down simply because the bag is described as weatherproof.

We've Seen What Happens When Dust Gets Inside First Aid Storage
This isn't purely a theoretical problem for us.
While looking at a wall mounted first aid box in a working industrial environment, we found a significant amount of dust across the enclosure and visible dust inside the storage area. From the outside, it still looked like a normal first aid point. Opening it told a different story.

It doesn't mean every wall mounted box is poorly protected, and it doesn't prove that water would have entered the same enclosure. Dust and liquid water behave differently. What it showed very clearly was how much the environment surrounding a first aid kit can matter.
That's one of the reasons we think the bag, closure and storage location deserve more attention than they generally get.
A Good Zip Still Needs to Be Easy to Open
There is no point protecting a first aid kit so well that it becomes difficult to access.
Safe Work Australia's guidance emphasises quick access to first aid equipment, which makes usability just as relevant as durability. If somebody cuts their hand badly in a workshop, you don't want the person grabbing the first aid kit wrestling with a damaged slider or a zip that has separated around a corner.
Protection
The bag and closure should suit the dust, moisture, dirt and general conditions around the place the kit is stored.
Access
The kit should still be easy to identify, retrieve, open and navigate when somebody actually needs first aid.
Check the Zip When You Check the First Aid Kit
Most workplace first aid inspections naturally focus on what's inside. Are supplies missing? Has the saline expired? Has somebody used the last large dressing and forgotten to replace it?
While the kit is already open, spend another 30 seconds checking the bag itself.
- Run the zip along its full length and make sure it opens and closes properly
- Look for damaged, missing or separating teeth
- Check for dust and grit around the teeth and slider
- Inspect the stitching where the zip joins the bag
- Look for tears or worn areas around the opening
- Check inside the bag for unexpected dust or moisture
- Make sure the kit can still be opened without excessive force
If the bag is damaged, fixing the contents list won't solve the whole problem. A replacement dressing can be added in seconds. A zip that no longer closes properly means the enclosure itself may need attention.
What If the Zip Is Full of Dust?
Some surface dust is hardly surprising on a worksite. If dirt has built up around the closure, carefully removing loose material while you're inspecting the kit makes sense.
Be cautious about reaching for oils, solvents or random lubricants. Different zips, coatings and fabrics use different materials, and applying the wrong product can create its own problems or simply attract more dirt. Follow the manufacturer's care instructions where they are available.
If you're constantly cleaning large amounts of dust from the kit, though, the bigger question is probably where it is being stored. Moving it to a better protected but still easily accessible location may be more useful than repeatedly cleaning it.
What Should You Look for in a First Aid Kit for a Dusty Worksite?
If you're buying a first aid kit for construction, mining, a workshop or a work vehicle, don't assess the zip on its own. Have a look at the complete kit.
- Outer material: Is the bag suited to a dirty working environment rather than light household use?
- Zip and closure: Does it operate smoothly and feel appropriate for the size and purpose of the bag?
- Stitching and seams: Are the zip and handles securely integrated into the bag?
- Internal organisation: Can you find a dressing, saline or pair of gloves without emptying the entire kit?
- Portability: Can the kit be taken to an injured worker rather than always bringing the worker to the kit?
- First aid supplies: Do the contents actually reflect the injuries and hazards you need to plan for?
- Refilling: Can used and expired supplies be replaced without buying another complete kit?
- Storage: Is there somewhere accessible to keep the kit without exposing it to unnecessary dust, moisture or heat?

The Bag Matters More Than Most People Think
Medical supplies are obviously the most important part of a first aid kit, but they may spend a long time waiting to be used. The enclosure has to look after them in the meantime.
That's why we think it's worth looking beyond the contents list. Pick the kit up. Open it a few times. Look at the outer material, zip, stitching and internal layout. Think about where it will actually spend the next few years.
A first aid kit for the kitchen cupboard and a first aid kit bouncing around a work ute don't necessarily need to be built the same way.

Don't judge it only by the piece count printed on the packaging.
Look at the bag that will be protecting those pieces. Run the zip. Check the stitching. Look at how the contents are organised and think about the dust, dirt and moisture around the place you're planning to keep it.
A zip is a small part of a first aid kit, but on a dusty Australian worksite it is one detail worth getting right.
