Dust in the eye is one thing. A piece of metal thrown from a grinder or a splash of chemical is something very different. Knowing what the eye care supplies in your first aid kit are actually for is just as important as having them there.

The hazards vary considerably between jobs. A carpenter may be dealing with sawdust and timber particles. Someone working around a grinder may be exposed to high speed metal fragments. Concreters can be exposed to cement and concrete splashes, while mine sites, workshops and processing facilities can introduce chemicals, dust and other substances.

That is why the eye care setup should start with the hazards of the work rather than a generic checklist.

Do Australian Workplace First Aid Kits Need Eye Wash?

There isn't one universal rule saying every workplace first aid kit in Australia must contain the same quantity of saline or a particular style of eye wash bottle.

Workplace first aid requirements are risk based. In Western Australia, for example, WorkSafe WA says first aid kit contents should match the risks in the workplace and specifically notes that workplaces using chemical liquids or with a higher risk of eye injuries may need additional first aid items.

The practical point is straightforward. An office and a fabrication workshop do not necessarily need identical eye care provisions. Neither do a suburban building site and a remote mining operation.

If cutting, grinding, machining, chemicals or significant airborne contaminants are part of the job, eye injuries deserve specific consideration in the workplace first aid assessment.

What Is Saline Eye Wash Used For?

Sterile saline is useful for irrigating the eye when loose dust or a small foreign object is sitting on the surface. Healthdirect advises that if a small surface object cannot otherwise be cleared, the eye can be gently flushed with water or sterile saline solution.

This is the kind of situation where having saline in a portable first aid kit can be genuinely useful. If someone gets ordinary dust or loose grit in their eye while working away from a fixed first aid room, having irrigation fluid close to the job means they don't need to go looking for it.

The important word here is loose.

Not every foreign object should be flushed out

If something has penetrated the eye or appears embedded, don't try to pull it out or aggressively flush it. Eye injuries involving drilling, cutting or grinding can also be more serious than they initially appear and should be medically assessed.

What Does an Eye Cup Actually Do?

An eye cup is a small reusable device shaped to sit around the eye. It can help make controlled rinsing with a suitable eye irrigation fluid more practical, particularly when dealing with loose dust or debris.

A workplace with a foreseeable risk of hazardous chemicals entering someone's eyes may need dedicated emergency eyewash equipment capable of providing substantially more flushing fluid.

Don't rely on a small bottle of saline as the entire eyewash plan for a significant chemical hazard.

When Might a Workplace Need an Eyewash Station?

This comes back to the risk assessment.

WorkSafe WA's First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice says emergency eyewash equipment should be provided where there is a risk of hazardous chemicals or infectious substances causing eye injuries. Depending on the workplace, that equipment can be permanently fixed or portable.

This is quite different from saying every building site or every mine vehicle needs a plumbed eyewash station. The appropriate setup depends on the hazard and where people are exposed to it.

Areas worth looking at closely can include:

  • Work areas where hazardous chemicals are handled or transferred
  • Workshops using substances capable of causing serious eye injury
  • Processing areas with chemical splash hazards
  • Locations where infectious material could foreseeably enter the eyes
  • Remote work areas where immediate access to other suitable flushing facilities is limited

If hazardous chemicals are involved, the relevant Safety Data Sheet should also be checked. It provides information about the hazards, exposure controls and first aid measures for that particular substance.

Eye Wash on Construction Sites

Construction creates a mixture of eye hazards, and the appropriate response depends heavily on what has entered the eye.

Sawdust or ordinary site dust sitting loosely on the surface is very different from a fragment produced by a grinder. Likewise, concrete or cement entering the eye introduces a chemical exposure that shouldn't be treated as ordinary dust.

Healthdirect specifically advises seeing a doctor as soon as possible when something enters the eye during drilling, cutting or grinding. That's worth knowing because a tiny metal fragment may not look particularly dramatic from the outside.

Prevention should remain the priority. Suitable safety glasses, goggles or face protection should be selected for the task. The first aid equipment is there for when prevention hasn't been enough.

Treat chemical exposure more seriously than ordinary dust.

On a workplace using hazardous chemicals, workers should also know where to find the relevant Safety Data Sheet and understand the site's emergency procedure before an incident happens.

This is exactly why a couple of small saline bottles shouldn't be used to justify not providing dedicated eyewash equipment where the risk assessment says it is needed.

What Should You Check in Your Workplace First Aid Kit?

Eye care supplies are easy to overlook during a kit inspection, particularly if they haven't been used for a long time. When you next check the kit, look beyond whether an item simply appears on the inventory.

  • Check that the eye care supplies identified by your workplace risk assessment are present
  • Check saline and other sterile items are within their expiry dates
  • Make sure sterile packaging remains sealed and undamaged
  • Replace saline or eye care supplies after they have been used
  • Check workers can reach appropriate eye irrigation equipment quickly
  • Review whether new chemicals or work processes have changed the eye injury risk
  • Check the relevant SDS where hazardous chemicals are used
  • Make sure workers know where emergency eyewash equipment is located

The last few points are particularly important. A perfectly stocked first aid kit isn't enough if the actual hazard requires equipment that isn't in the bag.

Don't Confuse First Aid Equipment With Eye Protection

Eyewash is there for after an exposure has happened. The better outcome is preventing the material from reaching the eye in the first place.

Safety glasses, sealed goggles, face shields, machine guarding, dust extraction, wet cutting and other controls may all form part of managing eye injury risks depending on the work. First aid doesn't replace those controls.

The same applies in reverse: wearing eye protection doesn't mean a workplace can ignore first aid planning. Equipment can fail, glasses can move and unexpected exposures still happen.
