How Many First Aiders Should a Remote Mine Site Have?
There is no single first-aider number that should be applied blindly to every mine in Australia.

- One first aider for every 50 workers in low-risk workplaces

A single first aid kit in an administration building may not provide practical access for everyone on a large remote operation.

Plan for the Time Before Medical Help Arrives
Remote first aid planning should consider the period between an injury occurring and professional medical assistance taking over.
That period may involve initial first aid, communication with emergency services, getting responders to the casualty and arranging transport or evacuation.
Sites should avoid relying on a generic assumption about how long an ambulance or other medical response will take. Access can be affected by distance, road conditions, weather, aircraft availability and the exact location of the casualty.
Instead, emergency planning should be based on the realistic circumstances of the individual operation.
First Aid in Mining Vehicles and Remote Work Areas
Mining workers do not necessarily spend their entire shift near the main first aid facilities.
Light vehicles and other mobile work arrangements can take workers significant distances from the site's central facilities.
Safe Work Australia's model Code recommends portable first aid kits in the vehicles of mobile workers where the vehicle is their workplace. It also says vehicle kits should be safely located so they do not become a projectile in a collision.
For mining operations, the risk assessment should consider whether workers travelling or working away from central facilities can still access suitable first aid equipment quickly.
Vehicle-based first aid presents its own storage, accessibility and environmental challenges, which is why mining vehicles should be considered separately as part of the site's overall first aid arrangements.
Protect First Aid Equipment From Mining Conditions
Mining environments can be hard on first aid equipment.
Dust, moisture, contamination and heat can all affect the condition of a kit and its contents over time.
Safe Work Australia's model Code says first aid kits should be made from material that protects their contents from dust, moisture and contamination.
First aid supplies should also be inspected to make sure they remain sealed, within expiry dates and in suitable condition.
On a remote mine, it may be sensible to inspect heavily exposed kits more frequently than equipment sitting in a clean office environment.

Don't Forget Contractors, Night Shift and Isolated Workers
