A fully stocked first aid kit is much less useful if workers cannot find it quickly.
Common problems include kits that are:
- Buried underneath tools or materials
- Stored in a locked office
- Moved between different locations
- Hidden inside an unmarked toolbox

- Located too far from the areas where higher-risk work is being performed

4. Know Where the AED Is

5. Test the Process
An emergency plan is much more useful when workers actually understand it.
Safe Work Australia's emergency planning guidance requires workplaces to have procedures for responding to emergencies, notifying emergency services quickly, obtaining medical assistance, communicating during the emergency and testing emergency procedures.
Running through the process before an incident can reveal simple problems such as locked gates, unclear site addresses or first aid kits that nobody knows how to find.
Your Emergency Plan Matters Too
Under the model WHS Regulations, workplaces need an emergency plan. Safe Work Australia says the plan must cover how to respond effectively to an emergency, notify emergency services quickly, provide medical treatment and assistance, communicate with people at the workplace and test emergency procedures.
The plan should be tailored to the workplace, including its:
- Nature of work
- Hazards
- Size
- Location
- Workforce structure
- Proximity to health and emergency services
This is particularly relevant to construction and trade businesses because a good emergency plan can reduce confusion during the first few minutes of an incident.
A Simple Workplace Response-Time Test
You can learn a lot about your emergency preparedness with a simple exercise.
Pick a realistic work area and ask:
- How quickly can someone find the nearest first aid kit?
- Can they reach it without moving tools or equipment?
- Do workers know who the nearest trained first aider is?
- Where is the closest AED, if one is available?
- Can someone clearly explain the site's location to Triple Zero?
- Can an ambulance actually access the work area?
- Who would meet emergency services at the gate or entrance?
- Do workers know what to do while waiting for help?
You do not need to invent a legal target such as "the kit must be reached within 30 seconds". The goal is simply to identify unnecessary delays and remove them before a real emergency exposes the problem.
